Your Root Chakra: 5 Quick + Easy Tips to Heal the Foundation of Your Energy System
Could your root chakra use some attention or support? If you’re like most people, it probably could, especially if you often feel anxious, have low energy levels or struggle with money issues.
All of our chakras need care. And as the foundation of your energy system and the gatekeeper to your sense of stability and groundedness, including your connection to Mama Earth’s energies, when the root chakra gets out of whack, it’s challenging for the rest of your chakras to be clear and balanced.
Luckily, you can begin to take a few quick steps today to start giving some love to your root chakra, and supporting the health of your entire chakra system.
What are the Chakras?
The chakras are a part of the energy body, or system.
More specifically, the chakras are the seven main energy centers in the body that regulate and process the flow of life force energy in and around each of us. Each chakra is responsible for supplying energy to specific parts of the body, mind and emotions.

Where is the Root Chakra Located?
The root chakra is the first chakra. It is located at the base of your spine.
It’s associated with the adrenal glands.
Here’s a diagram that shows where the root chakra is on the human body:
This chakra is also known as Muladhara in Sanskrit. The meaning of Muladhara is “root or support.”
What Does the Root Chakra Do?
Your root chakra is connected with your ability to survive, as well as your sense of stability and security in your life. The health of this chakra greatly impacts your strength, stamina and adrenal function.
It also supplies energy to your bones and teeth.
How Do I Know If My Root Chakra Needs Support?
Signs of a balanced root chakra include a great level physical energy, a sense of being grounded and having good overall health. If you don’t feel that this describes your life experience, your root chakra could probably use some support.
If you’re still unsure, consider the following questions:
- Do you often struggle with fear, worry and anxiety?
- Do you find yourself eating or drinking, or smoking or using drugs, as a way to escape life and it’s pressures?
- Do you have any issues with your feet, legs or knees?
- Do you frequently have low energy levels and feelings of weakness?
If you answered yes to one or more of the questions above, then consider trying out one of the following root chakra health tips.
Your root chakra is connected with your ability to survive, as well as your sense of stability and security in your life.
What Can I Do to Support My Root Chakra?
While chakra healing is a comprehensive field, you can take some quick and easy steps TODAY to start to bring healing and balance into your root chakra.
Let me show you how easy it can be!
Tip # 1: Tap into the Energy of RED
The root chakra is associated with the color red.
This means that wearing the color red can actually support your root chakra. So throw on that favorite red dress, sweater or scarf and start feeling more vitality fill your body!
If you don’t want to wear red, you can simply gaze at the color, such as a red flower, a red wall or even a red piece of construction paper. Anywhere that you can find some red to look at will do just fine.
But when it comes to red, you don’t want to over do it. It can be quite stimulating, so only look intently at red for five minutes or less. I avoid using it entirely with clients in the case of heart disease, high blood pressure, varicose veins, ulcers, anger or aggression, and I suggest you do the same.
Tip # 2: Go Put Your Feet on the Ground
Weather permitting, go and take off your socks and shoes and put your feet on the ground. Stay like this for five minutes or more.
Doing this will immediately ground you, supporting the health of your root chakra, and helping to connect you with the energy of the Earth. It can also help you to let go of any unhelpful vibrations and to detox your body, mind and emotions.
You see, when you are grounded, you are connected to your body, your physical experience, the people, beings and environment around you, the here and now, and the Earth herself. This is as opposed to feeling spacey, disoriented and disconnected from yourself and those around you. When you’re grounded, your root chakra is clear and activated.
If you can’t get outside to do this, that’s okay, too.
Instead, just sit or stand with your feet on the floor. Breathe calmly and imagine roots extending out from the bottoms of your feet and down into the Earth. Once your roots are firmly in the Earth, breath, or simply intend that you are drawing, the Earth energy in through your feet and legs. Feel yourself being fully connected to the planet and grounded in your physical experience.
Tip # 3: Harness the Power of Crystal Healing
You can work with a crystal that supports the health of the root chakra. Good choices include:
- Smokey quartz
- Black tourmaline
- Red jasper
But there are many more choices available. Simply follow your intuition to find the crystal that is right for you.
Once, you’ve got your crystal all picked out, you can hold the crystal in your hand and “breathe” in the energy of the stone.
Or, you can lie on your back and place the crystal directly on your root chakra, right over the public bone, with the intention of supporting that chakra. As you lie with the stone, do so with the intention of supporting that chakra.
If you’re new to crystal healing start with five to ten minutes, and then gradually build up to 20 minutes of this practice.
Tip # 4: Work with the Magic of a Healing Affirmation
You can also use an affirmation to support the health of your root chakra.
Here’s a healing affirmation for your root chakra:
“I am energized and grounded. I feel strong and safe.”
You can repeat this affirmation, either out loud or silently to yourself, while meditating. Or, you can just say it whenever you feel like it, supporting your root chakra, and all its many functions, throughout your day.
While you speak or think the affirmation, envision your root chakra as clear of blockages, spinning freely, and as a beautiful, bright red color.
Stopping to visualize your root chakra as healthy, while supporting it with loving, encouraging words throughout the day, is one of the fastest and most effective ways to make a difference in its functioning.
Tip # 5: Make Friends with a Yantra
Each chakra has a sacred symbol that represents it, called a yantra.
Here is the yantra for the root chakra:
Gazing upon this yantra in meditation will help to clear, strengthen and fortify your root chakra.
You can start by looking at this image with a very soft focus to your eyes. Don’t stare intently, just relax. You can start with as little as one to two minutes, and work you way up to ten or more.
That’s it!
Now, do as many of these tips as often as you can, and expect to see a difference in the weeks to come. Just like with any practice or goal, consistency is key. And doesn’t your root chakra deserve some loving support?
Remember, your root chakra is the foundation of your energy system, and supports your:
- Adrenal health
- Energy levels
- Bones
- Finances
- And more!
